Star Wars Dark Side – 5k

Our wake up call came bright and early at 3:30 am. We quickly got ready and headed out to the bus. Once we got to the staging area, I headed to the character lines to find Nicki and Jamie went to the Information booth to get her bib. She ended up finding us in the line before we got to the front. So, we all got a picture together with Jabba the Hut.

We still had time but most of the lines were long. We managed to get one more picture with this creature from The Force Awakens.

Our friend, Tara, was handing out medals as a volunteer.

She had to be there super early to secure that job. We wandered over to the finish area to say hi before the race.

Robert and his sister found us over here. Soon, we decided it was time to head to the corrals. Nicki and I were in C.

Jamie was in the last corral. Nicki and I decided to run this one together. 5ks are fun runs and are not timed at Disney. Soon the corrals started walking forward. Then, we sort of heard the National Anthem. I will admit at the front of the corral in the holding area, we couldn’t really heard the emcees. There was some Star Wars music playing rather loudly. Every corral started to fireworks.

When it was finally our turn, the light from the fireworks was really powerful.

This race is very similar to the Princess 5k. We ran access roads into EPCOT. On these access roads, we saw a line formed. I told Nicki to get in line while I ran up to see what the line was for. It turns out, it was just an AT-AT leg.

So, we decided not to stop. Then we came to the back area of EPCOT.

Just after this gate was R2D2. His line was really long so we didn’t stop. We tried to do a drive by picture, but it didn’t turn out so well.

We got to Mile 1 in this area.

Just after Mile 1 was a large screens playing scenes from the movies.

We entered at Mexico.

The first water stop was at China.

There was a photo op with the Rebels characters just before American Adventure.

The photographers got a great running picture of us by Morocco.

There was a really long line for Chewbacca by the International Gateway.

We got to Mile 2 shortly after passing Chewy and just before we entered the backstage areas.

I got a picture of the Cantina smokers and caught Patty Holliday in front of them.

There was a second water stop in the backstage area.

We came out in the United Kingdom.

I believe this photo was from the Canada area.

I’ve never run through this part of EPCOT so it was nice. There was a line to get your picture with the Mickey topiary.

On the platform to the water fountain show were stormtroopers. The line was fairly long, but we figured it was the last chance for a Photo stop and we didn’t stop for anything else. We kept a lookout and found Jamie before we got to the front. So, we got another picture with all 3 of us.

I love that the EPCOT ball is in the background. We ran towards the front entrance and around the big, circular fountain before heading back again.

We exited out to the parking lot. This mobile large screen was playing movie scenes.

They had photographers right after that.

Shortly after we got to Mile 3.

If you ever wondered what it was like crossing the finish line, I decided to video all my finishes this weekend. They are a bit bouncy since I am just holding my phone at shoulder level.

When we crossed the finish line, we made sure to look for Tara.

We all got our medals from her.

After the medals is a large medical tent.

Then long stretches of tables with water…

… and Powerade.

Then you line up for a finishers photo.

After the photo, you get a snack box and a banana. Here’s a picture of the goodies from once we were back in the room (ignore the Luna bar box that I brought and the Clif bars that came in the bags with the shirts).

Once we had gathered all these goodies, we decided to head straight for the bus to the resort. The line wasn’t long at all and we got on the next bus.

Overall this was not a bad course. I really liked the route we took. Nicki was disappointed there weren’t more Dark Side characters on the course, but they did have them at the pre-race and again after. Besides the 2 pictures we got, they had Boba Fett, Darth Vader, Darth Maul, Captain Phasma, Storm Troopers, and BB8. I arrived on the first bus from Port Orleans French Quarter and a couple lines were already closed when I got there. One thing that did improve this time, the PhotoPass photographers were awesome. The shots they took look amazing. runDisney finally did something to improve things.
